China & Human Rights

Yesterday (12-4-99) I read the story of a hacker who has been sentenced to death in China. At some level I have been disturbed by Chinese human rights violations for years, however this story lead me to wake up and pay attention. So quickly I have put together this page with some contacts for protesting Chinese human rights violations. Also I have provided some links for more stories about Chinese human rights violations.

The name of the man sentenced to death is Hao Jingwen. His brother was also charged with the same crime. Hao Jingwan's brother was spared of the death penalty in exchange for testifying against his brother. I cannot say that I think that what these brothers did was right. Still I do not think the punishment fits the crime. And like I said this story awoke me to the terrible record of China in human rights. For the last twenty years it seems like we have heard that we should be tolerant of China. That eventually the forces of freedom would prevail. Myself I have my doubts. Sure we might stand to make a lot of money off China. And it looks like a sure thing that business does not want to confront China. Still at what cost to our own freedoms do we tolerate the human rights abuses in China?

I am hopeful that we in the internet community can make a difference. I am now sending messages expressing my concern about the Chinese hacker. I will post any responses I recieve. I also plan to add more resources to this site. Please do feel free to contact me
